My name is Alanna Ricks. I am a high school student at North Eugene High in Eugene, Oregon in the United States. Music has always been a huge part of my life and is my biggest passion. I play a multitude of instruments, both in and out of school, as well as sing. Because of my love of music, I am involved in many groups; the Eugene Springfield Youth Orchestras (ESYO), the Willamette Valley Honor Band (WVHB), my school’s Wind Ensemble and Varsity Choir, a quartet with fellow music enthusiasts, and also volunteering with the local Soromundi Chorus.

Growing up, music, and specifically singing, impacted a lot of my daily life. It changed the way I interacted with my older brothers and made for some fun memories with friends and family. One memory I have is singing along to the closing song of the children’s show Bear and the Big Blue House with my brothers, dancing around the room. I think I ended up actually falling off the couch after crashing into one of my brothers.

The farthest thing back I can remember was when I was 2 or 3. My family was living in a small apartment and I had to share a room with my brothers. None of us could fall asleep so my mom came in and sang Lullaby for a Stormy Night by Vienna Teng to us. Even though I was terrified of the darkness, her voice and the soft lyrics would always get me to sleep. Because of her singing to my brothers and I, that song has a special place in my heart and is what inspires me to continue my musical education.
